Wahoos 20
We Play All Positions 5
A resounding win for the Wahoos last night against We Play All Positions, 20-5 in 5 innings. The Wahoos' offensive onslaught was merciless, batting around in each of the first four innings. Nearly everyone had multiple hits. The story of the game was the aggressive baserunning as the Wahoos continually exploited the WPAP outfielders' decisions to ignore the cutoff and throw to the wrong bases. Dave Rose inspired the aggressive baserunning in his first at bat with a wide turn around second that drew a throw from the opposing third baseman that sailed into right field. In his second at bat, Rose rounded third base at the same instant the ball arrived at the base and a stunned 3B could not react in time to make a play at the plate. Later, Kisha Simmons followed Rose's lead and slid into third base under the tag, which sent him into a tirade directed at Alvin. Rose also deserves the game ball for three innings of shutout pitching in relief. Scott Dubord made his much anticipated return from paternity leave with his trademarked opposite field base hits.

That was a nailbiter. We started off strong getting two runs quickly and keeping the lead for most of the game, until the bottom of the 7th when they miraculously scored two runs to take it to extra innings. But with some crucial hitting in the 8th, we pulled out another solid win. MVP goes to Patrick for an outstanding pitching game and his top of the 8th bases-clearing 3-RKI triple to recapture the lead and pretty much seal our victory! Great defensive plays by Ben at shortstop and Katie M in the outfield. And Kelly for a clutch catch in the bottom of the 7th to take us into extra innings! Jansen made a beautiful tip pass to Clark for an out (this is a good strategy folks…if you don’t think you can catch the ball…give it a little push in the air like a set in volleyball…someone should be there to back you up). Thanks a bunch for the orange team for sticking around and supporting us, particularly for all the heckling of Skurky (justified or not). We will return the favor this weekend!

Summer Softball Week 3
Wahoos 8
Stout Irish Sports Pub 7
(contributed by guest columnist, Brian Levy)
Short a Y chromosome, the mighty Wahoos rallied from an early 6-run deficit to win in the bottom of the 6th on a walk-off single by GJ Halfond, 8-7. Neil Ligon sparked the offense both by breaking up Stout's attempt at a perfect game in the 3rd inning with a single, then scoring the winning run after tripling to lead off the bottom of the last inning with a flare into right field. Ligon's triple proved Tim McCarver prescient, how often do you see the guy in the field make a great play lead off the next inning with a key hit*, in this case fielding a sharp grounder to Ligon's left (with a great scoop by Annie Martinsen) to make the final out and keep the game tied.
Mitch Parry started off the Wahoo scoring in the 3rd with a two-run walk, followed by Dave Rose with a 2-RBI single that turned into a triple due to some aggressive baserunning. Later in the game, Annie Martinsen showed some aggressive baserunning of her own, scoring from second when she caught Stout's infield napping. Certainly a team can't overcome a 6-run deficit without strong defense and pitching and that is exactly what the Wahoos had last night. After a few walks in the early going, Melissa Danielson found her groove on the mound despite Alvin's inconsistent application of the flat pitch rule. Parry, filling in at shortstop from his usual leftfield, helped stop the bleeding during a Stout rally by making a lunging catch over his right shoulder. Rose sacrificed life and limb (though not nearly so much as the girl in the subsequent game who got beaned in the head by a throw as she was running out a ground ball to first base) by making a catch up against the fence in foul territory. Newcomer Kisha Simmons made a stalwart defensive play behind the plate in the top of the last as well. Overall, it was a season-defining win.
* Editor's note - I maintain that since these two events are statistically independent, this happens approximately 11% of the time when a great play is made in the field to make a third out and there's a hit to lead off the next inning, though I do not yet have the data to back this claim up. Just a nerdy observation from your favorite statistician.

Summer Volleyball Week 6
Wahoos 21 18 19
Cavs 15 21 21
It was a really great match, definitely one of the most evenly challenging I think either team has had this season. Wahoos won the first game 21-15, then the Cavs took the last two, 21-18 and 21-19. All three games kind of blend into a blur of trash talking, great serving (I think between the two teams, we maybe only had 6-7 faults for the whole match), solid digs and impressive setting/spiking.
Highlights/observations:
- Fabulous job by our subs, Nathan and Jay
- Both Julie and Jay had some pretty long runs serving with some aces interspersed throughout, though at moments Jay demonstrated a knack for making near perfect serves had they not landed precisely 3 inches out of bounds each time
- Lots of great digs by Jay, Nathan and GJ (though GJ's might have been more amusing than the others')
- Nadine was picking up everything off the back line per usual
- KQ doing well up front and by far the loudest communicator
- Kevin with some nice hits and a great block, and even resisted the urge to play tricky, never pulling out some of his signature moves (ie: pass it deep corner right away, etc.)
- Melissa utilizing some strategically "missed" serves to incite Kevin follow up with misses of his own
- Julie breaking out a grunting layer to her blocking technique, creating subconscious distraction enough to cause several hits to land in the net
- The plethora of open-handed dinks over the net. ;)
- Nate and Nadine taking MVP honors, Nate for some serious ups (one might have thought he hide a little trampoline in the sand) and Nadine for some amazing passing and a well-time string of 6 or 7 serves in a row in the 3rd game to help open a much needed lead (ultimately erased when the Wahoos came back for an 18-18 tie, but a key moment nonetheless).
Overall, it was a super fun match and hopefully we'll get to replicate it during the playoffs :).

Summer Kickball Week 2
Virginia Orange 7
SPSU 4
As for Orange, it was certainly a sloppy victory, but a victory nonetheless, 7-4 over SPSU. The kicking was decent to good, 7 runs in 6 innings is a solid output, and there weren't too many errors on their end to pad our numbers. The defense was a different story entirely – There were a few, ahem, “players caught out of position“ over the course of the game, but luckily it didn’t come back to hurt us too much.
Some positive highlights:
- Thirza picked up a lot of the slack with multiple solid plays in right center field, many times in crucial situations and bailing others out.
- “Fundamentals” player of the game goes to Ben Maddox for backing up 1B from RF on an overthrow. It went unnoticed to many, but it turned out a be a very big play.
- Kevin May with a near HR only to be thrown out inches from touching home plate – the team voted to place the blame squarely on the 3B coach to rename nameless who sent him on the play…
- Matt Bine showing great concentration, holding on for a great catch despite nearly blowing out a previously injured knee, and banging his head hard on the ground in the process.
Orange season record: 1-1
Next game: 7/19 vs. FSU, 2 pm
Emory 4
Virginia Blue 2
The first inning was a little shaky as they loaded the bases, but our defense pulled it together to make Virginia kickball history by getting out of it with a sweet triple play (instigated with a catch of a line drive by Ben and a heads up pick off of the runners on first and second). Offensively we got off to a bang with two runs in the second (or was it the third) to go up 2-0. Throughout the game we had some outstanding defensive plays at second between James and Elizabeth, Ben and Elizabeth, and Dave Clark and Elizabeth. Basically, without Elizabeth we would have no defense.
Best (i.e. most amusing) defensive play of the day is a tie between James' diving "I got it! I got it! - I don't have it." non-catch for an infield bunt (seriously awesome effort) and the Bad News Bears collision in the outfield between Blaise and GJ (just an early season reminder that calling the ball might be a good idea).
Best kick of the day goes to the Emory girl that booted a ball into centerfield about twenty feet past GJ!
On the whole we kicked well. In fact somewhere in the middle innings we loaded the bases with one out but couldn't seal the deal. And if they hadn't put first base in Gwinnett (damn it was far) then several very good infield kicks by Ashley, Adam and GJ and James would have resulted in base hits. Keep up the good effort!

Summer Volleyball Week 5
The Wahoos won the first game running away (21-6 or something like that), then the rain and lightning came in. Long story short we lost the last two, but part of that was due to breakups in the middle for lightning, then a rain delay. We should have won the 3d game, but didn’t came back strong after the rain delay. Brian was especially adept with his serves last night, and placed his hits very well (definitely the star of the match). Julie’s friend Kristen filled in and did a fine job in the back row while Julie did well at the net, with a few nice blocks on their hitters. Though it wasn’t intentional (allegedly [ed. note]), Kevin likely appeared to be a saboteur as he hit quite a few into the net. A good all around showing by the Wahoos…something about Service with a Smile that they squeak out those tight wins against both our teams (that is the same team that the Cavs lost two games 21-20 a couple weeks back).
As for the night match, the Cavs took on Grumpy Lettuce. They are a great team…and even though they dominate, they are still very fun to play against. We lost all three, but had two game points in the last game and ended up losing 21-20. Nadine continued her stellar back row play (and did even better once Kevin got out of her way and let her receive most of the serves, since Kevin was passing them into the side netting for most of the first game and a half). I think her highlight was digging a killer spike by Sean (tall guy with dark hair) while she was yawning…perfect pass to Kelli, and we ended up winning the point. His team gave him quite a bit of grief since Nadine was able to get his ball up while yawning…good stuff. GJ continued to hustle and pick up balls that didn’t seem possible. KQ did very well at the net and intimidated their hitting more than we probably expected. On a very positive note, we were very well organized this week…best of the season…so looks like we’re getting our “sea legs” with our set group of 4. Had we done a little better on our serve receive and passing, we could have won a game (and almost did in that last one). Even though we lost all 3, it was still fun to play with such a good team, and they have a very positive attitude, which also makes it fun.

Summer Volleyball Week 4
Wahoos had a great showing, sweeping Overserved by winning a nailbiter in the first game (21-20) and two close games (21-17ish for both). Kelli subbed in to be a great help in holding down the back court, Julie had several runs of quality serves, including several aces, and Brian demonstrated some great court vision, putting down some hard spikes and well-placed psuedo-tips
The Cavs faced a tough team in Yanks and Gators, and managed to pull out a victory in the third game. Brian resisted the tag of being the saboteur by putting down some spikes in the third game, Kelli picked up some great digs at and off the net, Kevin continued his usual stellar play and it is hard for a ball to find the sand with Nadine in the back row. To do list for next week: KQ needs to go through her garage, or closets, or old storage space, wherever, to find her serve…she obviously lost it Tues night!! Seriously, lots of fun, great passes all around, and as has been happening lately, the refs and other teams seemed to be impressed by our progression. Nice job all!

Virginia Blue 12
UNC 3
Virginia Blue got the season off to a good start by thumping North Carolina 12-3. Offensively, everyone contributed to the offensive juggernaut with probably every player getting on base at least once and nearly everyone scoring a run. "Best slide" and "best dressed" awards both go to Nate Smith, who proved that sliding into second base really is more fun when you are wearing your going-out jeans
Defensively, there were several standouts:
- Dave Rose did his best Nomar Garciaparra impression at shortstop with an amazing diving catch to rob Rocco's sister of a hit
- G.J. had a couple great plays in the outfield including a running catch of Matt's (redhead on UNC with big leg) bomb that almost went into the street and another play where he nearly popped the ball, but recovered quickly and still managed to throw the lead runner out at first base.
- Melissa had a solid day at second base with several good put outs
- And Robert Roberts (known as "2Bobs") got called up from the minors (the Sunday independent league) and pitched an excellent 7 innings and greatly helped out our team while we were without our normal pitcher and short on players.
Next game: 7/12 vs. Emory, 1 pm
Auburn 10
Virginia Orange 8
Virginia Orange wasn’t as fortunate, as we ran into a powerhouse Auburn team (overall champions of the Spring season). We gave them a big run for their money though, as it was a seesaw affair the whole way through, with them narrowly holding on in the end, 10-8.
We fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first and traded 2 run innings for the next three I believe. After some more back and forth, we headed to the bottom of the 6th inning (which was determined the last inning ahead of time) down 10-7 and staring defeat square in the eyes. However, even after the first two kickers made outs, the team didn’t give up and we put together a rally, only to fall just short. Newcomers Yevonne and Cary Chandler got on base and we were in good shape with the top of the order coming up. Mark Rogers came through with a clutch double scoring Yevonne, and all of a sudden we had the tying run on 2nd base with Sudhir and KMay coming up. Unfortunately it didn’t work out as Auburn’s pitcher made a good pitch and forced Sudhir into a fly out to end it, but all in all it was a great battle put together by the Orange crew.
Highlights:
- A fantastic catch off the face by Casey Holliday – way to use your head!
- Multiple quick reflex plays by Mark on the mound, not to mention a nifty over-the-shoulder catch while narrowly eluding a charging Megan Price
- A solid kicking performance by pretty much the entire team. I can’t remember single wasted at-bat, as every single person put pressure on the defense to make a play. Auburn is a good team and we made them earn their victory.
- Back to Mark, a great complete game pitching performance painting the corners all game long.
